Glacier National Park

In 2018 I had the most amazing blessing of exploring the extraordinary beauty and awesome grandness of Glacier National Park with my very dear, outdoor adventure loving friend, Jan. While she was fighting strong through a year of chemo and radiation, we planned a 'victory' adventure to go explore and experience the wonders of Glacier National Park together.

Oh what an awesome adventure it was too!

With it's glaciers, sparkling lakes, crystal clear rivers, rushing waterfalls, untouched forests, alpine meadows and rugged mountains covered in an abundance of blooming wildflowers and wildlife!...oh my! It was breathtaking! There are over 700 miles of trails within the vastness of Glacier National Park. We only had seven days, so we hiked just a smidge of those trails, but the miles we did hike were filled with incredibly awesome, breath-stealing wonders!

WE HIKED ~

THE HIGHLINE TRAIL
We traveled the Going To The Sun road to Logan's Pass where our trailhead was located. This section of the Highline Trail follows along the Continental Divide and is filled with sweeping, awe inspiring views every step of the way! We did an out and back hike to Haystack Pass, where we took our lunch break while enjoying the amazing, breath-stealing, panoramic views of Glacier!

There are numerous waterfalls flowing down the side of this mountain wall along with an abundant variety of blooming wildflowers! An amazingly beautiful, lush garden growing on the side of a mountain, very appropriately named the 'Garden Wall'.

SWIFTCURRENT PASS TRAIL
This trail passes along Fishercap Lake, where we caught a far off look at a bull moose dipping his head in and out of the water, continuing on along Redrock Lake with Mt. Grinnell towering over it, to the beautiful cascading waters of Redrock Falls! It was such a warm sunshiny day that on our way back we went swimming in the crystal clear pool at the bottom of these waterfalls!...oh my gosh!...so much fun!

The trail continued, lined with sweet smelling wildflowers, leading us under canopies of Aspens, which I'm sure are stunningly beautiful all dressed in their brilliant fall colors of yellow and orange!...over wooden bridges and through patches of huckleberry and thimbleberry bushes to our destination, Bullhead Lake. This icy cold glacier lake is tucked in at the bottom of Swiftcurrent Mountain and Swiftcurrent Glacier.

GRINNEL GLACIER TRAIL
The Grinnell Glacier Trail was filled with more beautiful rushing waterfalls, icy cold glacier lakes and stunning, breath-stealing views of mountaintops and lush mountain valleys!

Above is a capture of Grinnell Lake with Grinnell Falls rushing down the mountain side from upper Grinnell Lake. These lakes are fed by Grinnell Glacier, which makes their waters icy cold! Jan and I both wanted to plunge ourselves in a glacier lake. Crazy...right!? We did it though!...after walking for what seemed like forever in icy glacier water that numbed our feet and legs up to our knees, we were finally able to get past the shallows into deep enough water for a very quick plunge! Oh my gosh!...Oh my gosh!!...was that ever cold!...and exhilarating all at the same time! We laughed and celebrated as we made a mad dash back to shore! Talk about feeling 'alive'!...Wow!!

ROCKWELL FALLS TRAIL & ASTER OVERLOOK TRAIL
We combined a couple of trails today. Our hike to Rockwell Falls led us through patches of brilliant wildflowers, along beaver ponds, and over a suspension bridge. There are actually two amazing waterfalls here, upper and lower Rockwell Falls. The crystal clear pool at the bottom of the lower falls is an awesome place to experience an icy cold plunge! Oh yes!...you know we did! LoL! Crazy cold, exhilarating fun!!

After warming up and enjoying our lunch by the falls we continued on to the Aster Overlook trailhead. This trail climbs a steep 500 feet to an amazing panoramic view of the Two Medicine Lake valley.
We had the awesome experience of sharing this mountaintop with a herd of big horn sheep!

WE DAY TRIPPED ~

TO WATERTON-GLACIER INTERNATIONAL PEACE PARK
Waterton-Glacier Int'l Peace Park is located in Canada so you do need a passport to explore this area of Glacier National Park. We took a boat tour across Waterton Lake to the Goat Haunt Ranger Station located on the southern shore. From here we hiked to Goat Haunt Overlook, which was a short, steep, yet very sweet hike that rewarded us with awesome views of Waterton Lake and the Waterton River Valley. We also hiked to Rainbow Falls. This trail follows along the Waterton River through forests and meadows filled with huckleberry bushes and wildflowers. As the trail gradually climbs, the river starts rushing and cascading over and through the rocks creating Rainbow Falls.

After our Goat Haunt area hikes, we spent some time exploring the quaint little village of Waterton before returning to our lodge.

WE WHITEWATER RAFTED ~

We had a blast rafting the Middle Fork of the crystal clear Flathead River with Montana Raft-Glacier Guides! We conquered the class lll rapids through John Stevens Canyon! YeeeHaaa!! During the calmer class ll sections we pummeled the occupants of our companion raft using the water guns our guide had stashed for us! What a riot! Paybacks were received in full with an abundant amount of shooting water! OoooWeee! They nailed us good! LoL!!
Our guides were amazing! They made sure this wild experience was filled with loads of crazy fun!

So very thankful we were able to enjoy this! It was the perfect way to spend our last day in Glacier National Park!

WE STAYED ~

LAKE MCDONALD LODGE
Built in 1913, the historic Lake McDonald Lodge is nestled in on a small wooded bluff overlooking Lake McDonald. The lodge is filled with its own unique rustic charm and is surrounded with amazingly beautiful majestic mountains! Oh my!

We spent the first night of our awesome adventure here in a cabin on the shore of Lake McDonald! Oh yes!!

MANY GLACIER HOTEL
The Many Glacier Hotel was built in 1914 along the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake at the base of Mt. Grinnell. Our room here was one of our favorites...with its cozy, comfy, swiss cottage style! And the views...oh my gosh! Everywhere we looked it was so unbelievably beautiful! We kayaked on Swiftcurrent Lake while we were here...and we watched in awe as Mt. Grinnell glowed a golden orange as it was kissed by the rising sun!

GLACIER PARK LODGE
The historic Glacier Park Lodge was built in 1913. Well known as the 'Big Tree Lodge' because of the huge 40 inch diameter Douglas Fir pillars that tower over 40 feet high to form the main supports for the lodge's massive lobby. The beautiful gardens surrounding this rustic, western style lodge were filled with abundant varieties of blooming wildflowers! Amazing beauty everywhere!

ROCKY MOUNTAIN LODGE
Oh my gosh!....how the time just flies right by! After spending our last night at the Rocky Mountain Lodge in Whitefish, we decided to pamper ourselves just a smidge with a pedicure before heading to the airport to catch our flight home. After miles and miles of hiking our feet were again very happy with us!

It's amazing out there!!....Go explore!

ADDITIONAL NOTES ~
We used the National Geographic Glacier and Waterton Lakes Topographic Trail Map while on this adventure. Always carry a trail map with you!

We were planning on hiking the Ptarmigan Trail, another highly recommended trail, however there was a lot of grizzly bear activity on this trail while we were there. Always...always check trail conditions at the ranger's station!

Andrea and Brie with Montana Raft-Glacier Guides were the best!! They made our 'victory' adventure exploring the wild grandeur and amazing wonders of Glacier National Park so much fun! It was an amazing and exhilarating experience!!
